State Institute of Health & Family Welfare (SIHFW), Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow is an govt. apex institute of State for Training and Research in the area of Medical, Health and Family Welfare. The Institute was previously known as Population Centre and was established in the year 1973 - 74 under India Population Project - 1 with objectives to conduct evaluation studies, base line and end line surveys, to develop MIES for project districts and to plan and implement operation research (OR) projects.

In the year 1980 - 81 under IPP - 2. Management Training Cell was added to the Population Centre with additional responsibility of organizing Management Development Programme for PHC and District level Senior Medical Officers. During the year 1990 - 91, IPP - 6 was implemented in the state with a major emphasis on training component. In IPP - 6 Population Centre including Management Training Cell, was upgraded and renamed as State Institute of Health and Family Welfare, U.P.
